Functional Groups We have seen that IR is really a “Functional Group Detector.” As such, it will be a valuable tool throughout this year. You should become accustomed to examining an IR spectrum and looking for characteristic bands that indicate the presence of a Functional Group.

Organic Functional Group Interconversion. Gojko Lalic of the University of Washington developed (Angew.Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 6473.) conditions for the preparation of the fluoride 2 by S N 2 displacement of the triflate 1.

Our Department offers B.S. Chemistry and B.S. Biochemistry majors, which are professionally accredited by the American Chemical Society. Our students also enjoy student-faculty interactions, educational opportunities, and comparatively low tuition that make us an appealing educational option.

Infrared Spectroscopy. 1. Introduction As noted in a previous chapter, the light our eyes see is but a small part of a broad spectrum of electromagnetic radiation.

The Role of Functional Groups. In organic chemistry, a functional group is a specific group of atoms or bonds within a compound that is responsible for the characteristic chemical reactions of that compound.

The spectrum for the ketone, 2-pentanone, appears below. It also has a characteristic carbonyl band at 1700 cm-1.The CH stretch still appears at about 3000 cm-1, and the CH2 bend shows up at approximately 1400 cm-1.
